Turn Any Surface into a Speaker

While we still don’t have consumer versions of that Light Touch projector/computer that turns any surface a touchscreen, I have come across something that is available that turns any surface into a speaker. OrigAudio has come out with, “The Rock-It portable vibration speaker system takes music from your device and generates it into vibration sequences. It sends those vibrations through the Rock-It “pod” which you can stick to any object. Simply press play on your device (iPods, MP3 players, mobile phones, laptops, etc.) and Rock-It will turn the object into a speaker.”

It works with any audio device that has a headphone jack, and runs off either two AAA batteries or a USB connection. This little portable vibration speaker system comes with an audio cable extension cord, USB power cable, and four replacement sticky pads. How many audio products do you see that say it, “Works best with: Cardboard boxes, doors, windows, mirrors, lamp shades, flat surfaces, file cabinets, dressers, home appliances, and much much more!”

While it’s available at origaudio.com I found it for $10 less elsewhere. While there’s not yet a direct link to this product, if you’re interested in checking it out, just go to

What’s more, and a welcome surprise to me, is that they offer free shipping to the United States and Canada, so often Canada gets left out of these deals. They do also appear to ship internationally, but I didn’t see posted rates.

This video demonstration clip at the end of this post shows the device in use, and gets more interesting just before the 2 minute mark when the thing gets stuck to a Kleenex box. Then among other things, it’s a picture frame, a box of cereal, a paper cup, a water bottle, even a plastic bag filled with air and then a rolled up piece of paper, a refrigerator, a printer, and kitchen cupboards.

Some sound comes out of the sticky device when unattached, sort of like hearing earbuds when not in the ear, but when you stick it to anything, the sound suddenly improves many many times over. Even knowing what it was supposed to do, I was still surprised by the huge difference in sound when it was stuck to that box of Kleenex.

While you’re there, you’ll also see another very cool way to get speaker sound from your portable music devices, and at half the price. Instead of attaching something to a cardboard box, these speakers actually are little cardboard boxes. They come printed with a variety of different designs, but somehow the canvas or plain brown just looks so right, so what it is, recycled and environmentally friendly.

You’ve heard of plug and play devices, now we have fold and play ones too. Wonder if they’ll ever house a computer in a cardboard box. I’m imagining shipping carton and computer all-in-one…maybe not too practical…but talk about easy to recycle.
