In Awe of the Earth’s Power

Iceland volcano
The recent spate of earthquakes around the world, and the continuing volcanic eruption under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier in Iceland are an impressive though frightening reminder of the power of nature. The Icelandic volcano that has thrown the airline industry has now started producing lava and is finally spewing less ash into the sky according to a Reuters. Scary forces of nature, especially when we lie in their wake. But since we can’t change, let alone control these mammoth powers, what choice do we have but to be in awe? Frightened awe perhaps, but awe.

While Earth Day tends to stand for reducing our damaging impact on the earth, I think it’s also a great opportunity to celebrate the planet itself. Kind of like a Happy Birthday to the place that gives us a home. A good chance to pause and remind ourselves of all the innumerable rejuvenating and regenerating processes and cycles that are constantly occurring. The wonder of the seasons, of all life cycles both plant and animal, the spinning of the earth that just keeps going, and has for millennia. Longer lasting and more complex and amazing that we can possible fully realize, let alone understand.

It is with that that I choose to take comfort instead as I stand in awe looking at the moon at night, or the sun as it rises and sets. And even gravity itself. Just how do we keep from falling off this giant round ball? A part of all this we are. No matter how small, we get to bear witness and be a part of it. Let tomorrow, and every day, be a day of celebration for the earth itself, and for all who get to live upon it.

Here’s some raw Associated Press footage from April 20th 2010 that shows the volcano still spewing ash, but part way through this clip you can also see glowing red lava as well. Reminds me of when reporters described the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption as, “when HELL surfaced upon the earth.” Or why 16th century Spaniards called the Masaya Volcano in Nicaragua the “Mouth of Hell.” And yet this same planet also gives us life. Heaven on Earth too in so many ways. I’m in awe of it all.
