AMC Approaching NBC Universal about Law & Order

20100706 lawandorder 560x375New York Magazine is reporting that AMC, “home to groundbreaking hours Mad Men and Breaking Bad has approached NBC Universal about the possibility of producing new episodes of Dick Wolf’s long-running and recently cancelled drama,” Law & Order.

While not out of line in terms of episodic TV production costs, especially for ones that have been on the air so long and have rising salaries etc., Law & Order would cost in the range of the $3 million an episode deal that AMC has reportedly (deadline.com) reached for its show, Breaking Bad. Given the respective ratings of the shows, Law & Order starts sounding like a bargain. (Thank you AMC for considering this, and good luck!) As NYMag says, “the established series [L&O] could prove to be a potent way for AMC to market its homegrown shows to viewers who might not already be hip to the unique charms of Don Draper and Walter White.”

The last month or so, there had been no new news about the show. After TNT said they were not interested in taking over, and producing a 21st and record breaking season of Law & Order, it seemed like all hope was lost. There has also been no further information from NBC regarding how, “NBC has said they plan to film some sort of wrap up to give closure to the 20 year old TV show.” As I said a month ago, I was skeptical that would happen given some of NBC’s other recent decisions.

Law & OrderIt’s important to remember that it was widely reported more than four months before Law & Order’s cancellation that the show was going to be renewed. There have been some rumours flying about that the cancellation may have even been some sort of payback by NBC head Jeff Zucker to get back at Turner (TNT, TBS) because they signed Conan O’Brien to a new show on TBS – the timing would kind of fit. But I sure hope it’s not true – I hate to think the powers that be are that petty.

But this post is about wanting to share the positive tidbit about AMC approaching NBC Universal about doing Law & Order (the original and not some poor substitute like the Los Angeles version NBC is promoting instead). I hope this AMC tidbit becomes a big bit, and optimist I am, that a 21st season can somehow be worked out.

Of course there could also be the hurdle of needing TNT on board with this since they hold rerun rights to the show, and could apparently veto a deal. But let’s hope that whatever reasons there may have been for cancelling the show, that everyone involved can come together to reach a fresh deal. And that the show literally goes on.
