Bye Bye Watch Batteries

With all the massive ills that accompany our ever-increasing quest for energy, I’d like to concentrate for a moment on something on a much smaller scale. My little dead watch battery. It occurs to me that there are actually ways to get a free energy supply. Solar power is nothing new, but mainstream, widespread use remains elusive.

I remember hearing of a relative’s neighbour who nearly went broke installing huge solar panels that cost a bloody fortune on his roof. That was more than 20 years ago. You’d think we’d have come further in that time. While there are increasing options for solar powered devices, the progress has not been what I had hoped. Still, I choose to be thankful for what solar progress we have seen, rather than what we have not…but hope we will.

Thankfully for what we do have, costs have come down, at least for some items. It seems everywhere I turn I see bargains for a whole host of outdoor solar-powered lighting fixtures. No wires connecting them to worry about either. I even saw a paper lantern the other day that had a solar panel on top.

I think the most exciting items are solar alternatives for items we need, as a replacement for, rather than an addition to our collection of stuff. (George Carlin would be proud I hope.) My watch battery died recently, and it got me to thinking about all those little disposable things that rarely find their way to recycling depots for such things – talk about not being easy to find – and more often than not end up leaching their chemicals in a land fill. Watch batteries may be small, but their numbers add up, just like election votes among other things…each of us counts.

Anyway, I was faced with buying another seemingly overpriced and chemical-filled disposable battery, when I remembered something. Something I should never have forgotten. I had a solar powered watch. While stylish and great for daytime wear, it’s not as graceful for playing the harp, so I had set it aside years ago. No more. After years of sitting in a drawer, it still works perfectly. I just let it sit out in the light for a little while, and presto, it was back. And on my wrist as I type. I love seeing it there, both for its cute factor, and as an ever-present reminder it costs me absolutely nothing to tell time. My own portable sun dial. My substitute for not being able to tell time simply by looking at the sky.

Styles are more varied now than when I got mine over 15 years ago. I’ve seen more sporty solar digital watches than analog ones, but happily discovered there are some pretty classy versions available now. Hopefully a style to please everyone. You can see a little patterning of a solar panel on the face of the watch beneath the numbers, but it just looks like part of the design. On some of the newer ones, I couldn’t even tell you where the panel was. Prices seem in line with non-solar options as well. But even if a favourite is a little more, you’ll save a bundle never having to buy batteries. I know that’s my plan from now on thanks to my little Citizen Eco-Drive. The sun is so cool.

Since digital and/or sporty solar watches are easier to find, I’ve focused on the dressier styles below.
