One of Time's Lessons

It never ceases to amaze me how we never stop learning. I don’t mean just book learning, but the kind of realizations and lessons, that only time and experience can bring. It seems no matter how old we get, we can always look back and marvel at how little we actually knew before. Be it when you’re 12, 20, 40, 60, or 100, you think you’ve finally really figured something out. You think that yeah, this is what it’s all about, whatever it is. And then it happens, time does what time always does, keeps on moving forward (as should we) and you realize that amount of time later, always later, for there’s always a later if we’re lucky, just how little we really knew back then, whenever then was.

Maybe it’s good thing we develop this way. Imagine the opposite progression. The abject horror if we had to know, really know, just how little we knew as we were going through something. It’d be all downhill. We’d be scared to take a step, think or express a thought, knowing full well we’d know of a better way later on. It’s kind of like not wanting to know the future, and wondering how it would be altered if we knew what was to come. How much joy would be lost if we knew ahead of time what was around the next corner? Knowing statistical probabilities of likely future events is one thing. Knowing precisely the when is a very different story.

Ignorance is bliss – I do so like clichés – but I think there must be a happy medium. So I choose to simply acknowledge that one day I will certainly know more, be it book smarts or life smarts, but that that doesn’t preclude me from proceeding now with whatever I currently know. I can’t know the future, and I can’t know what more I will know then, but hopefully it will be a good progression. May I enjoy the ride, and be the better for it. The evolution of a life. How lucky is that?
