One of the big tech news stories this week has been the release of the long anticipated Apple iPad. At times, all the jokes and puns due to the ‘pad’ part of its name have overshadowed talk about its design and features. Who would have thought feminine hygiene products would find their way into computers? I don’t know what it says about me that I didn’t actually see anything wrong or funny with the name until others pointed it out. Now of course, I can’t get the pun out of my head. Jokes and even little videos are circulating about future products like the MaxiPad and iTampon. Is it only a matter of time before these revolutionary products hit the market?
I find it hard to believe Apple would intentionally name their new product to be the butt (or something else) of so many jokes. But, and you gotta love the English language, it seems that just about any word or phrase can be twisted into a double entendre. It can become almost impossible to say anything without someone who’s looking for pun material to point out the double meaning. Whatever you say can be taken in an unintended or unwanted direction.

While puns can be fun, and I’ve certainly been known to use them, it seems English is just too easy to play with. It might be nice sometimes if words were just taken for their intended meaning, and not the suggestive or accidental meaning. Just take the iPad for what it is, a pad (as in a pad of paper for writing) tablet shaped computing device. After all, I don’t recall people saying years ago that the iPod came to us from body snatching Pod People. Then again, maybe I just missed that story…
