I was all excited to write about how the Apple iPad is finally getting released elsewhere in the world. Currently only available in the US, it’s now been announced that it will be available in Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, and the United Kingdom on May 28th 2010, with pre-orders now being accepted.
While this is all true, the part I’m not so excited about anymore is that the pre-orders are only available directly through Apple. They are not allowing any of their re-sellers to take deposits or place any pre-orders for iPads from any customer. Just when I feel drawn towards Apple, loving their enviro-friendly stance, they do something else that just strikes me as too controlling. As if all their proprietary apps aren’t enough. Now if you want to pre-order, and be sure you get the thing as soon as possible, you can’t even buy it from your favourite store, you have to buy direct from Apple.
No wonder all my searches for the iPad at all the stores and sellers I keep tabs on, have been in vain as I try to find the best bargains to post here. Finally, I got my answer for the no-show iPad at all these places, it’s not allowed, Apple says no. The fact that it was as difficult as it was to get this tidbit of information is also a little disturbing. In announcements for the May 28th release date, it’s mentioned that it will be available “from Apple’s online store in all nine countries” but nowhere in newspaper print etc., have I seen it say it will only be available this way.

You’d think the more ways to buy something, the more places it’s available would be viewed as a good thing by a company looking to sell a product. Can you just see a film distributer choosing to show a blockbuster movie in fewer theatres, making it harder for people to see it, and view this a wise money-making plan? While in some ways we may want what we can’t have, driving up demand, in this situation, there’s been no limit on the number of iPads available online, just a limit on whom they may be purchased from now. If something’s not easy and convenient to get, some people will just choose something else. Not everyone, but some will be driven away. We’re an easily ticked off society after all.
If Apple were offering some sort of exclusive deal, a special price or something to order directly, I would say more power to them. That’s the way the free will free market system works. But instead, this just appears as another example of monopoly behaviour, of control over captive customers. Just doesn’t instill much good will in this one. In this society, whether we should be or not, we are used to getting what we want when we want, and in the way we want. Competition is key, and the customer is always right, or at least must be treated as such. In this delicate economy, the logic of making the iPad harder to get, rather than easier, escapes me. As will the iPad if you don’t like their pre-order policy.
That said, I’m assuming (always a dangerous thing to do) when the iPad is eventually available from other sellers, I will post that information here, as well as the best prices I can find. Gotta keep competition alive for those precious dollars, euros, yen, et al.
