They say there are two sides to every story, or so the saying goes. Others say, and rightfully so I think, that there can be many more than two. I think there’s usually at least three. What’s that other saying? Something about the truth probably be somewhere in the middle. This is not because anyone has to intentionally try to mislead, or tell an inaccurate version of their story. It’s just what happens. We see our own side most clearly. While we can hopefully try to see things from other peoples’ perspectives, can we ever completely know another’s opinion or belief as completely as are our own?

But in that limitation, I also see a possible benefit. Have you ever started out agreeing with one person, on their side completely, but as you see more of the situation, as a third party at least slightly removed, you find your feelings changing? You start realizing the other person has a point. It’s not so clear cut after all. Each ‘side’, for want of a better term, is so personally involved, that they can only see things from their own point of view. Completely understandable. But is it not perhaps that third party that sees things most accurately? That third side? That observing side, where you start to see things not through anyone else’s eyes, hear not just their respective perspectives, but see more what’s really there in front of you. At least in your opinion…for whatever that’s worth.

And continuing with opinions…what about looking at things through rose-coloured glasses? Gee, there sure are a lot of old expressions that we pick up from goodness knows where. But just as it often is with stereotypes, there’s usually a basis of truth somewhere in these old slogans too. The thing with seeing things each in our own way, is that no two pairs of those rose-coloured glasses are the same tint. (Sorry that’s so corny.)
