Any Surface a Touchscreen

How close are we to actually having those little portable holographic 3D talking image things we saw in the later incarnations of Star Trek? Closer than I realized it appears. While not here yet, I have just seen what I think could be a precursor to it. It’s a portable holographic projector/computer that turns any surface into a completely functional touchscreen.

I found it really wild to watch the video demonstration of Light Blue Optics’ newest creation, the Light Touch, as seen below. This demo does the best good job I’ve seen so far of both showing the device in action, and explaining how it works. But there are other videos out there that show it turning the tabletop itself into the touchscreen rather than the piece of paper, as shown in this clip.

Thomas Ricker at engadget.com writes that the “product is a laser projector that turns any flat surface into an auto-focused and image-adjusted 10-inch touchscreen with WVGA resolution thanks to its laser- (not LED) based pico projection engine dubbed HLP (holographic laser projection) and infrared touch-sensing system. Light Touch runs Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, 2GB of on-board storage (with microSD slot for up to 32GB more), and a battery capable of about 2-hours worth of runtime.” More details about this technology can be found at the Light Blue Optics website.

How cool is it be able to scroll through and rearrange photos or drag folders around the ‘desktop’ just by touching an ordinary tabletop? To tap and double tap or draw with your finger on any flat surface, and have it be just as if you were using a regular computer touchscreen. I already think actual touchscreens are pretty darn amazing.

This technology is so new that it is not yet available to consumers. According to Light Blue Optics, they are just the developer of the technology, and won’t be the manufacturer of actual consumer applications. But this device is definitely something I’m intrigued by, and will keep my eye on.
