Today’s Smallest and Cutest Flash Drive

What is it about size? Some things we want as big as possible, a house or bank account for G-rated options, but for others we want them as small as they can get. Electronic devices seem a prime example, except of course for those big screen TVs that fall into the former category of bigger is always better.

It’s funny already to see the cordless phones on Friends for example. What was cutting edge at the time, now appears almost laughably enormous, resembling old-fashioned walkie-talkie more than our current cordless phones. How quickly we adapt and get used to the latest new thing, to the point of almost forgetting what life was like before. It seems every time we turn around a little tech gadget has gotten smaller, and cuter just because of its new size.

We certainly do seem to have a ‘preoccupation with size’. A phrase that also serves as a little tip of the hat to those who commemorate April 14th 1912, and the film that paid homage. Not trying to be annoyingly obscure or obtuse, but, “Freud? Who is he? Is he a passenger?”

But setting aside objects of Titanic proportions, is there a point where small becomes too small? A point where the increased portability is outweighed by the rather mundane concern of is it finally too small to actually be practical or usable. We don’t want to need a magnifying glass just to find the darn thing.

One shrinking gadget that is happily still on the side of cute and practical, is the Pico USB Flash Drive. Ironically we keep getting bigger storage capacities, even as the devices themselves grow smaller. Interesting juxtaposition of sizes isn’t it?

It’s the “Teeniest flash drive around…Barely bigger than the tip of your pinky…[it can] store up to sixteen full length ripped movies, twenty full days worth of music, more than sixteen-thousand 5 megapixel photos, or three-hundred-twenty meters worth of shelved books. Sure, it’s so small you could easily lose it, so we’ve included a chain to help keep it around.” Someone has even attached one to their dog’s collar. Talk about the ID tag to end all ID tags…

Seriously though, this tiny polished chrome and nickel flash drive comes in 3 capacities: 8, 16 or 32 gigabytes. (Prices are actually pretty comparable to ordinary flash drives, especially for the 8 gig model at $24.99) It’s Mac, Windows, and Linux compatible, measures just 31.3mm x 12.4mm x 3.4mm, and is shock and water resistant. And did I say it was cute too? Nice not to look all plasticy either, gives it extra class to go with all that cuteness, and smallness of course.
