It’s a fine line to walk sometimes. How long do you wait to comment on a piece of news that’s still evolving? Wait too long and it’s no longer news. Don’t wait long enough and the information could change. Since I’m here writing on the latest Criminal Minds development, I guess I’m erring on the side of better to get the information out there.
Complete details have yet to emerge, but here’s the latest on the major cast changes set to happen on CBS’s Criminal Minds this fall. I wrote earlier about my disdain for CBS’s decision to cut one, and reduce another of their lead female roles, leaving just one female on a show that will now be dominated by males, males more often than not rescuing female victims. I won’t rehash all my thoughts on this and the unfortunate message I feel it sends, but suffice it to say, the new news I’d like to share here is not all good.
But then again, given how often networks seem to keep the chaff, and chuck the grain, I guess I should be grateful the news isn’t worse. But what does that say about how low our expectations have become for the powers that be, in all too many walks of life? Ah well, maybe it makes it more sweet when we actually agree with a decision or two. As for Criminal Minds, I don’t agree with much of what’s been decided. The cast should have been left in tact – a proven team and ratings success. Why mess it up?
But at least A.J. Cook will back for 2 more episodes. She tweeted the following Friday afternoon, “Thanks for your undying support but it’s a done deal. I’ll be doing 2eps to wrap up JJ. Excited for what’s next and hope you’ll come along! XO.” A hole will be left in Criminal Minds though.
As for Paget Brewster and her character of Emily Prentiss, at first the news sounded really good. CBS has gone from plans to “dramatically reduce the number of episodes that Paget Brewster is in next season,” to have her in most of them now. Nellie Andreeva at deadline.com has reported, “I hear Brewster’s pact is for “10 out of 13”, which means that, extrapolated over the 22-episode season, she will be in at least 17 episodes…and that Brewster today also took to Twitter to comment on the resolution, hinting that the fans’ campaign, including an online petition that has gathered more than 42,000 signatures, may have helped in keeping her on the show for so many episodes and bringing Cook back to get a resolution for her character.”

Here’s Paget’s tweet to her fans. “So how do I thank 42,309 people. It worked. Thank you, everyone. Thank you for helping and supporting me and AJ. Thank you for everything!” Encouraging that the voice of the people, so to speak, at least has the potential to be heard.
However, the good news stops there, and this is where I really wish there were more information coming down the pipe. For reasons I have yet to hear, and certainly do not understand, we’re now hearing some other bad news. This season will be her last year on the show. Paget tweeted a follow-up, “PS- I should clarify. I am immensely grateful. I’m still angry about AJ. I’m sad this is my last year. But I wanted to thank the fans…” The show will most definitely not be the same without Agent Prentiss.
Why her last season? And why are we only hearing of it now and not when they first announced these cast changes? Or, was this part of the deal that they reached, the one that increased this year’s episode count for the character? Or part of CBS’s plan all along? Whatever the forum, be it big oil, big government, or big network, big whatever, I really wonder what goes on behind closed doors…
Let’s hope some good new shows are waiting in the wings to entertain as the effects of recent changes to the schedule are felt. Law & Order is now gone. Thank you, not, NBS. Criminal Minds cast tampered with. Thank you, not, CBS. Lost is gone. But in this case, a genuine thank you to ABC. They had a caring plan, and ended the show the way it deserved, cast reunited, not cut.
Since Paget will be on most episodes I’ll watch until she is gone. After that Criminal Minds can take a nose dive for all I care. I hope AJ finds something better, or maybe someone smart will grab her and Paget, maybe steal Vangness and make another sort of CM. Make it HBO or showtime! All the great shows on other channels will soon hopefully make CBS, NBC, and ABC obsolete!
