One Month Versary

Welcome to blog post number 31. Elizabeth Ely dot Com began one month ago today. Time sure has flown by, and I hope you are enjoying it so far, and will continue to far into the future. And if there are ever any topics you’d like explored, or you have other suggestions or reactions, I welcome the comments.

Speaking of comments however, one of the many new things I’ve learned since starting this journey, is that spam is not just a problem for emails, but for web comments as well. Fortunately I had a spam catcher installed from the beginning, so no such messages have been successfully posted on the site. But there have been over 35 attempts so far. Maybe you’re already familiar with this type of thing, but I had no idea that there are people out there posting completely unrelated comments for the express purpose of trying to build up their own site ranking.

If their comments are not caught at source, and therefore do show up in the comment section, the intent is that other viewers will click on the website links contained in these ‘comments.’ But these links don’t have anything to do with the post – they’re usually just links to buy unrelated products, or send someone to a ‘dummy’ type site that is just a homepage with nothing really there. You may be wondering as I was, why they would want to do this? What I’ve learned is that by increasing traffic to their linked sites, they give Google for example, the false impression that their sites are more popular than they really are. By driving up their page ranking like this, they make their site appear more desirable, and they can do another thing I didn’t know people did, sell the site, and for more than they otherwise could have. By clicking on spammed comment links one can actually be putting money into the pockets of the spammers. Who knew?
Just bear in mind, if you are confronting erection breakdown problem, you spouse will suffered by this as well. viagra super active Men with extra hazard elements, for example, an undescended gonad, past testicular malignancy, or a relative who has had testicular disease ought to take discount generic cialis month to month self-exams. I don’t want to scare anyone away from posting a comment. Feedback is always great. I just wanted to share what I’ve learned, and to say that our trusty spam catcher is alive and well, so we should all be protected from useless links. It does remind me though of the sad reality that there’s always a minority who seem set to cause trouble for the majority, whatever the arena. Gee, not a very cheery thought, and on the one month versary too…

…Which brings me to the other observation of this particular post. Whenever I hear the word anniversary refer to anything other than an annual marking of a day, I have to smile. Since the original Latin anniversarius came from annus for year and versus for turning, just how did an ‘annual turning’ turn into meaning just about any time frame that’s celebrated? Just a convenience perhaps? Just what happened over time? Colloquial use often changes or expands word meanings. For better or worse, modified usages or variations of a word can become so commonplace that these new versions find their way into the dictionary. Must be part of what they mean when they say a language must continue to grow or otherwise die. But as far as a monthly ‘anniversary’ goes? Well, I learned something else today, that mensis is Latin for month. So happy mensiversary!
