Even though it has yet to be released, the WePad I wrote about a month ago has been renamed. Why is it that names seem to be such a focus when it comes to these tablet computers? First we had all the jokes about feminine hygiene products and Apple’s name choice. Some are still waiting for the release of the iTampon.
Then the WePad was announced from German Neofonie. The inclusive plural ‘we’ alternative to our “i” centric society. I’m actually kind of surprised we didn’t hear Apple object to Neofonie’s name for their tablet competitor. Or maybe they did, and I just missed it. Or maybe it was done more quietly. I’m thinking someone must have talked to someone about it given that Neofonie has now announced their ‘pad’ computer will be a ‘tab.’ They’ve even changed the name the company trades under from WePad GmbH to WeTab GmbH.
Given marketing campaigns were already under way, it seems rather a costly time to change names, if not for some sort of pressure from somewhere. On the other hand, it does serve to get its product back in the media spotlight, and they do say that any publicity is good publicity. Also better to have the name change to talk about to hopefully distract the media from the recent three month launch delay. It was supposed to be released in Europe in June, but as of now, won’t be available until September 19th. Yes, better instead to talk about the name.

Neofonie has said they renamed it to “clearly differentiate our products within the international market for tablet computers.” Competition can lead to better and better products as each company tries to one-up the other, be it in quality, features, or price. Hopefully having such a worthy alternative in the Neofonie WeTab to Apple’s iPad will help everyone, at least those in the market for a tablet style computer.
Other than the name change and launch date, everything else appears to be the same as previously announced. I included a comparison chart of these two choices in my previous WePad post, and discussed some of the pros and cons of each. I love choice, even if it does make it harder to decide sometimes.
